Doppelganger
Doppelganger is a real-time 3D interactive web-based environment. The basis of the work is a series of seven portraits depicting artists around me (including a self-portrait) in Basel, Switzerland, where I was artist in residence from Jan – June 2002. The portraits were developed using a standard default figure of a 3D character modelling software, which was manipulated and re-modelled using a vast array of perimeters to create life-like portraits of the models.

The 3D interactive web based environment extends upon the digitally modelled portraits, addressing the portraiture environment and the model’s placement within this. The digital environment contains low-res avatars of the seven original models and drawn simulations of their real habitats (homes or studios). The work explores the relationship between 3D and 2D, and the representation of this using both digital and traditional artistic processes.
